Product Description
Quinine sulfate is a medication primarily used for the treatment and prevention of malaria caused by Plasmodium falciparum, Plasmodium vivax, and Plasmodium malariae. It is a salt of quinine, an alkaloid extracted from the bark of the Cinchona tree.Quinine sulfate works by interfering with the metabolism of the malarial parasites, leading to their death. It is most effective against the erythrocytic stage of the parasite's life cycle when it is inside the red blood cells. Quinine sulfate also has some antipyretic and analgesic properties, which can help alleviate fever and pain associated with malaria.
Its use in the treatment of malaria, quinine sulfate is sometimes used off-label for the treatment of nocturnal leg cramps, but its effectiveness for this condition is controversial. Quinine sulfate can cause side effects such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headache, tinnitus (ringing in the ears), and vision disturbances, and in rare cases can cause serious adverse effects such as cardiac arrhythmias and allergic reactions. Therefore, it should only be used under the supervision of a healthcare professional.
